After an intensive summer of concert activities, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society (LNPhS) is entering autumn and opening the doors to its 84th concert season. Its motto For the Love of Music reminds us that everything that happens in the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society, as a historic building in Vilnius, and in the concerts that are held here, is born out of this motive. It will also symbolically connect with the country of love, France, where, among many other artists, resident musicians of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society will perform during the Lithuanian Cultural Season.
The 84th season starts on 21 September. The opening concert Masterpieces of Paganini and Schubert will feature the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra (LCO) and its artistic director, violinist Sergej Krylov. Nearly 50 concerts are planned in Vilnius alone before the New Year, most of them in the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Concert Hall.
“The Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society welcomes its 84th season full of beautiful concert plans, ideas for the development of relations with various cultural and diplomatic organisations, and new ambitions for educational activities. We will offer the audience events of various genres – from symphonic music evenings to playful concerts for the whole family, so there will be plenty to choose from for audiences of all tastes and needs,” Rūta Prusevičienė, Director General of the LNPhS, presents the season.
The Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society will host both the best Lithuanian performers and foreign stars, among whom noteworthy are the pianist Jinhyung Park (28 September), winner of the 2023 Čiurlionis Competition, and the cellist Maximilian Hornung (5 October), patronized by the German violin superstar Anne Sophie Mutter. Hornung will be joined by Victorien Vanoosten, who begins his first season as guest conductor of the LNSO. On 28 September, the LNSO, led by its artistic director and principal conductor Modestas Pitrėnas, will share the stage with guests from Poland – the Warsaw National Philharmonic Choir and soloist Bartosz Nowak. By the way, this concert will also be a great opportunity for the audience to congratulate Maestro Pitrėnas on his 50th birthday.
There will be plenty of memorable encounters with foreign musicians throughout the season. Up until New Year we will welcome violinists Janusz Wawrowski (12 October), Hugo Ticciati (25 October) and Javier Comesaña Barrera (7 December), cellists Nicolas Altstaedt (29 October), Xavier Phillips (23 November), pianist Lukáš Vondráček and conductor Marek Prášil (9 November), mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, tenor Edgaras Montvidas, pianist Simon Trpčeski, conductor Karel Mark Chicon (13 November), Signum Saxophone Quartet (14 December), countertenor Raffaele Pe and La Lira di Orfeo Ensemble (21 December), and other guests.
Some of the programmes, The Power of Czech Music (9 November), French Music Masterpieces (23 November), Hungarian Soundscapes (30 November) and Vivaldi Cantatas (21 December), will build cultural bridges between the countries. The audience’s acquaintance with foreign performers will be broadened by concerts held at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Concert Hall, organised in cooperation with PI Vilniaus festivaliai, Tytuvėnai Festival, International M.K. Čiurlionis Music Festival and other organisations.
Bridges of camaraderie will be built in various directions. “We are glad that the LNPhS ensembles will perform not only in Lithuania, but also represent our country abroad, for example, in October the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and the NICO Ensemble will perform at the Grand Théâtre du Provence Aix, while Musica Humana will tour the USA, and in December the LCO will take off to Taiwan. At the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Concert Hall, we will mark the creative anniversaries of various ensembles and musicians, and the composers Feliksas Bajoras and Giedrius Kuprevičius, celebrating their anniversaries, will also be honoured with concerts. Caring not only for the education of the audience, but also the professional development of the musicians, until New Year we are planning to organise masterclasses on wind instruments led by foreign musicians. We will continue to offer educational excursions for those wishing to get to know the National Philharmonic better. “In order to reach our audience in the best possible way, we try to communicate not only live, through concerts or educational events, but also through various advertising means, constantly renewing ourselves. This year, we have updated the LNPhS’ website, and we are paying more attention to social networks. We value the loyalty of our audiences very much, so for the 84th season we are again offering season ticket discounts,” says Ieva Tamutytė, Deputy Director General of the LNPhS.
Audience members who choose three to four concerts organised by the LNPhS will be able to buy tickets at a 25% discount, while those who choose five or more concerts will get a 30% discount. An important exception is that the discount does not apply to tickets in the lowest price category, as well as to tickets for concerts of high demand and special status. The season ticket is valid only for events organised by the LNPhS and taking place in the Concert Hall from 21 September to 14 December (inclusive). It can be purchased both at the LNPhS box office and via kakava.lt.
